Introduction:

This page (and its subpages) contains information and downloads for my first major programming project - a freeware computer roleplaying game called Dark Disciples. Dark Disciples was programmed using MS Visual C++ 4.0 and the MS Direct X 5.0 Software Development Kit.

If you are looking for a freeware game with copious statistics and an intricate, multifaceted, combat engine you won't find it here. Instead, I focused my energies on having lots of non-combat challenges to solve and interesting things to do within the game world. Dark Disciples therefore attempts to differentiate itself by being a more puzzle orientated CRPG and therefore filling a precieved gap in the CRPG 'market'. For more information on Dark Disciple's features, click on the 'features' button to the left.

The game can be downloaded for free by selecting the 'download' button on the left. You can also view more information about Dark Disciples or check out some screenshots. Here is one sample screenshot to give you an idea of the 'look' of the game. Some call the graphics 'crap'. I prefer the term 'old school'. :)

Important News:

Dark Disciples I v3.4 has been released. This version comprises of a few bug fixes and an added convenience - the vault space has been doubled so you can now store twice as much equipment! Joy! Over time, I've had a number of requests for more inventory space and I've finally gotten around to impletementing it. Also, the Dragonslayer Quest script and Ilene's script have been modified so it's no longer possible to loose items they give you, if your backpack is full. Lastly, the cheat menu access key combination (see the Cheats section) has been changed because some people have reported the previous one ( CONTROL ~ ) not working on their PC.

Unfortunately, as with many previous updates, this one required a change to the save game file, so characters from previous versions will not be compatible.

Special thanks go to Swifty, Shockedfrog , Eugene Hung , Arc and GSerg for their contributions to Dark Disciples over the last couple years. Thanks to these people, Dark Disciples is now nearly typo and bug free.

Home of the Underdogs : Dark Disciples is currently available on this freeware / abandonware game site. However they still have v2.3 on their server which contains a number of bugs and is, in any case, somewhat out of date (I sent a couple of emails requesting an update, but never got a reply ). If you've come from their site, I strongly recommend you download the newest version from here.

v2.5+ Satan's testicles puzzle!

Congratulations to Ron Birmingham for being the first to discover the secret word. Yay! As of v3.4 the secret word has been removed from the game, although you can still find Satan's Testicles - if you are so inclined - and fight the Dark Prince himself. :o)

Copyright Issues

While Dark Disciples is freeware, it remains copyrighted. Pretty much all of the graphical elements in the game were drawn by myself, with the exception of a few textures which I found on the net. For those, I thank the internet community for its dedication to all things textured.

All original musical tracks were written and generously supplied by Bjorn Lynne. Naturally, all these tunes remain copyrighted to him. For more information about Bjorn's musical endeavors, wander over to his website at www.lynnemusic.com by clicking on the following graphic :
